We fix the cause, not the symptom
If a gutter keeps overflowing we check the falls, the bracket spacing and whether the gutter is sized for the roof, rather than clearing it again every six months.
Repair, replacement, installation and cleaning of gutter systems that protect your building from water damage.
Get a guttering surveyThis page is for anyone in South and West London with a gutter that leaks, sags, overflows or has left a dark stain running down the wall. K & M Roofing Solutions clears, repairs, resizes and replaces gutters, downpipes and hoppers on houses, flats and commercial buildings.
Guttering is the cheapest thing on a building to maintain and one of the most expensive to ignore. Water coming over the front edge of a gutter runs down the wall instead of into the drain, and a wall that never dries out means penetrating damp inside, blown render outside, rotten fascia behind the gutter and, where it soaks the ground at the base, movement in the foundations. Clearing a gutter costs a fraction of any of those.
The other thing worth saying is that a gutter which overflows again a month after being cleaned was never really blocked. Something else is wrong: the falls run the wrong way, the brackets have dropped, or the gutter is simply too small for the roof feeding it. We look for that rather than clearing it again and taking your money twice.
Blocked gutters behind a parapet are the commonest single cause of the damp we are called to, and on the Victorian terraces and interwar semis of our home borough they account for most of the winter work, which is set out on our page for roofing in Croydon, CR0.
If a gutter keeps overflowing we check the falls, the bracket spacing and whether the gutter is sized for the roof, rather than clearing it again every six months.
A dropped bracket, a perished seal or one cracked section is a repair, not a reason to replace a run of guttering that is otherwise sound.
The fascia behind a leaking gutter is usually rotten too. Doing both while the access is already up costs far less than two separate jobs.
Water running down a wall is doing damage every time it rains, so overflow and blockage call-outs get priority over routine work.
Gutters, hoppers and downpipes cleared of moss, leaves and silt, then flushed through to confirm water actually runs to the drain. Twice a year suits most London properties, and autumn matters more than spring because of leaf fall.
Dropped and missing brackets replaced, perished union seals renewed, split sections swapped out and leaking joints resealed. Most gutter leaks are a joint or a bracket rather than the gutter itself, and repairing those is a fraction of a replacement.
Where a gutter overflows despite being clear, we re-set the brackets to correct the fall, or fit a deeper profile and additional outlets where the roof simply sheds more water than the gutter can carry. This is the fix for the problem that keeps coming back.
Failed cast iron, brittle sun-damaged uPVC and undersized systems replaced with new uPVC or, on period and conservation-area properties, aluminium and cast iron effect systems that suit the building.
Downpipes renewed or re-routed, hoppers cleared and refitted, and the gully at the bottom checked, because a downpipe discharging into a blocked gully soaks the base of the wall just as effectively as a blocked gutter.
The boards that carry the guttering repaired or replaced at the same time, which is almost always the sensible moment to do it.
See fascias and soffits replacementWe inspect the gutters, downpipes, brackets and the fascia behind them, and where possible watch where water actually goes rather than guessing. Under an hour on a typical house.
You get photographs, a clear statement of whether this is a blockage, a fall problem or a sizing problem, and an itemised price separating clearing, repairs and any replacement.
Gutters, hoppers and downpipes are cleared by hand and flushed with water to confirm the run drains properly to the gully.
Brackets replaced and re-set to the correct fall, seals and unions renewed, and split sections swapped. Most domestic guttering work is done in a day.
Failed runs removed and new guttering installed, sized for the roof area feeding it and set to a proper fall, with the fascia behind it dealt with at the same time.
